Captain America Superbowl Movie Trailer

Captain America Superbowl Movie Trailer

Okay, so it’s not as terrible on second and third viewing as I was afraid it might be – but the editing feels sloppy and the few shots of Cap in action there are feel a little cheesy.

That said, there are a number of bright spots in the trailer, from the reveal of Hugo Weaving’s Red Skull –

- to the impressive-looking before and after shots of Chris Evans’ Steve Rogers.

Also, there’s Hayley Atwell’s Peggy Carter, who looks like a no-nonsense lady.

Finally, in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-them moment are a bunch of characters looking a bit familiar:

That looks an awful lot like some Howling Commandos, sans leader Nick Fury – although apparently Sam Jackson’s doing reshoots at the moment, so you never know…

Where Life Is Cold, and Kin Are Cruel

Even before the real trouble starts — with suspicious lawmen on one side and a clan of violent drug dealers on the other — Ree Dolly faces more than the usual litany of adolescent worries. Her father, locally renowned for his skill at cooking methamphetamine, has vanished, and her emotionally hollowed-out mother has long since abandoned basic parental duties, leaving Ree (Jennifer Lawrence) to run the household and care for her two younger siblings. The family lives in southwestern Missouri, a stretch of the Ozarks that is both desolate and picturesque, words that might also suit “Winter’s Bone,” Debra Granik’s tender and flinty adaptation of a novel of the same title by Daniel Woodrell. “Winter’s Bone,” warmly embraced at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, belongs, at least at first glance, to one of that festival’s familiar genres: the regional-realist morality tale. These days, American independent cinema abounds in earnest stories of hard-bitten people living in impoverished corners of the country, their moral and emotional struggles accompanied by acoustic guitars and evocative landscape shots and generally uninflected by humor.
The faces in “Winter’s Bone” are certainly mirthless — not only Ree’s, but also those of the relatives she turns to for advice and protection when her predicament becomes desperate. The topography of chilly hollows and ragged forests is filmed in a way that emphasizes its bleakness. There are banjos and fiddles, as well as guitars, and some beautiful old mountain ballads are performed on camera. Some of the cast members are nonprofessional actors, and nearly all are wary, watchful and taciturn, speaking their few words in faultless regional accents.
What distinguishes Ms. Granik’s film from, say, Courtney Hunt’s “Frozen River” — to cite another recent Sundance favorite with cold weather in its title and grim Americana on its mind — is that this harshness is not there to illuminate a sociological condition. Something more primal, almost Greek in its archaic power, is at stake in “Winter’s Bone,” and its visual and emotional starkness do no not feel like simple badges of authenticity.
This is not a story about drugs and family life in a particular region of the United States, even though it displays some impressive local knowledge (much of it derived from Mr. Woodrell’s book). It is more deeply about tribal ties and individual choices, about a stubborn girl’s sense of justice coming into sharp and dangerous conflict with deep and intractable customs.
In Ms. Lawrence’s watchful, precise and quietly heroic performance, Ree is like a modern-day Antigone, making ethical demands that are at once entirely coherent and potentially fatal. After his last arrest, her father, Jessup, put up the family property — including the house where his wife and children live — as bond, and if he does not surrender soon, it will all be taken away.
Jessup, however, is nowhere to be found, and Ree’s efforts to locate him leave her in a terrible dilemma. She must either betray the code of silence that keeps her extended family firmly and proudly on the wrong side of the law, or else face destitution.
“Aren’t we all supposed to be kin?” she asks, more than once, as she tramps through the backwoods from house to house, demanding information, help or just a scrap of elementary kindness. The kinfolk next door grudgingly offer food and monitor Ree’s encounters with the nervous deputies from the sheriff’s office who stop by from time to time. Jessup’s brother, Teardrop (John Hawkes), greets her with silent menace that erupts into violence, though he turns out to harbor more compassion than most.
“Are you going to kill me?” Ree asks, after a group of women led by the wife of the clan patriarch has beaten her and thrown her in a barn.
“That idea was talked about,” is the matter-of-fact reply.
Anxious sympathy for this young woman in peril — at 17, barely more than a child herself and forced to respond to challenges that would terrify most adults — is the prevailing emotion you are likely to feel when watching “Winter’s Bone.” It is straightforward and suspenseful but also surprising and subtle. Ree is torn between loyalty to her brother and sister and a desire to escape her ancestral home, to join the Army and make a new life for herself. But an interview with a military recruiter reveals just how deeply she is embedded in a way of life that has defined her family for generations.
The soldier, who patiently and kindly demolishes Ree’s dream of running away, belongs to a world governed by reasonable options and practical considerations. Ree lives somewhere else, in a universe ruled by ancient grudges and elaborate, inflexible notions of obligation, honor and shame. “Winter’s Bone” is about her discovery of how cruel her native habitat can be and also about her initiation into its ways — a coming-of-age story that is not entirely about breaking free.
Whether Ree’s world exists in quite the way Ms. Granik and Mr. Woodrell depict it is not really the issue; the film’s realism is a point of entry rather than the whole point of the exercise. Its setting is finally subordinate to the main character, as memorable and vivid a heroine as you are likely to see on screen this season.
“Winter’s Bone” is rated R. It has drug dealing, drug use and profanity.
WINTER’S BONE
Opens on Friday in Manhattan.
Directed by Debra Granik; written by Ms. Granik and Anne Rosellini, based on the novel by Daniel Woodrell; director of photography, Michael McDonough; edited by Affonso Gonçalves; music by Dickon Hinchliffe; production designer, Mark White; costumes by Rebecca Hofherr; produced by Ms. Rosellini and Alix Madigan Yorkin; released by Roadside Attractions. When you step out of school, you look forward to the life in college and of course, freedom. You are stepping into adulthood, learning to cope with life and enjoying the thought that you will be able to take your own decisions. With great difficulty you procure admission in a college and hope to nurture your dreams. But is it all that fun? Not really!

I was horrified when I read a news-report sometime back about a student being forced to bathe in his own urine by his seniors. I was aghast. I was disgusted. I was appalled. I genuinely felt that some socially responsible film-maker should make a hard-hitting film on ragging and create awareness on the evils of this form of abuse, which has caused several deaths in the last so many years. HOSTEL, directed by Manish Gupta, addresses the issue, although its not the first. MUNNABHAI M.B.B.S. and 3 IDIOTS also had a scene or two depicting the maltreatment. But the films should not be compared because this one is a full-fledged film on this subject.

Write your own movie review of Hostel
The story of HOSTEL is inspired by true-life events, I am told. But the question is, does it serve as a wakeup call in the true sense? Does HOSTEL successfully bring to the fore the gravity of torture people experience in the name of ragging? Unfortunately, it doesn . Sure, its well thought of and well intentioned, but not well penned and well executed. The film starts off brilliantly, but loses focus midway.

Ideally, a film depicting an evil should stay close to reality. It should depict the atrocities committed in the name of ragging without deviating to alternative tracks [in this film, the romantic track is a big bore]. A film tackling this theme should open your eyes to what a victim goes through. After all, the motive of films like HOSTEL is to act as an eye opener, to evoke feelings like anger and disgust, but it doesn evoke those feelings, frankly.

Ragging is a sadistic practice that has become a ritual wherein students are beaten up, stripped, paraded naked, starved, tortured, molested and even raped by their seniors. Since victims of ragging find it humiliating to report sexual abuse to their parents or others, most ragging-related crimes go unreported. Sadly, these very students -- who suffer silently at the hands of their seniors -- in turn vent their frustrations by ragging their juniors in the following years. Thus, this cruel practice continues year after year and has claimed [and is still claiming] the lives and careers of innumerable students.

HOSTEL comes to the point at the very start. The sequence at the outset - of Mukesh Tiwari physically abusing the young students - is hair-raising. A few minutes later, he repeats the act with the protagonist, Vatsal Sheth. To give the credit where its due, the sequences are disturbing and you only hope that the goings-on succeed in maintaining your interest.

HOSTEL crumbles the moment the love story begins. Plus, an interesting twist in the film - of Vatsal confronting a gangster - looks plain ridiculous. At this point, Mukesh Tiwari, who shouldve turned more ferocious, goes on back foot when it comes to dealing with Vatsal. Why? The post-interval portions, again, don measure up to the expectations. The finale is too clichéd and formulaic.

Director Manish Gupta, who went into an investigative mode in THE STONEMAN MURDERS, which was an engrossing fare, lacks the promise he showed in that film. And hes to be held responsible for it, since hes penned the script of this one. He shouldve stuck to realism, instead of trying to balance between real and hackneyed and corny sequences. Also, this one shouldve been a song less film, but the few songs throw a spanner in the narrative. Cinematography is functional.

One of the reasons why HOSTEL doesn work is because the casting is not right. Barring Mukesh Tiwari, who looks convincing and does well and Nagesh Bhosle [warden], who is equally effective, the actors don look their parts. Vatsal Sheth relies on a set of expressions all through the film, while Tulip Joshi is wasted. The students don look like students, frankly. They actually appear more like street thugs or rowdies and less like students of engineering to me.

On the whole, HOSTEL is a solid idea gone awry.

Vanishing On 7th Street Movie 2011

Vanishing On 7th Street Movie Trailer  2011 Release

Vanishing On 7th Street, “Vanishing onto 7th Street”’be used until the end of time as a horror thriller, where those who have remained stumbling around in a dark, deserted city light research against a seemingly eternal night. What of the point of view of an evangelical Christian beliefs, the strict terms of horror film needs a better villain.

Logic does not interfere with the attributes of a bloody horror film, but the public wants to understand the basic rules. This darkness, containing voices whispering and shadows, probably those who disappeared during the abduction, conquers souls alike.

The only rule seems to be someone clutching all sorts of light, a flashlight or even a match, is spared. Sometimes. Lights on and off willy-nilly if nothing is certain. And, really, how many times can you have characters journey and lose control of torch without prompting laughter?

When “Vanishing” hit theaters, the audience may already have gone small and since the magnet will be available upon request six weeks before.

The film, directed by Brad Anderson, proudly proclaims it was shot entirely in Detroit, probably because it is a great American city center that can watch and depression desert without too much effort by a film crew.

After a few wide shots of abandoned streets and damaged cars after a power outage, the film quickly retreats into a single, a tavern with the name of ridiculous “Happy Hour” Sonny, where four terrified survivors nestle against the dark miasma.

This is a slick TV journalist (Hayden Christensen), a physiotherapist (Thandie Newton) lost her baby missing, a projectionist (John Leguizamo), the projector saved him and a young (Jacob Latimore) saves his mother’s bar.

The city’s infrastructure has collapsed and the daylight hours grow shorter precipitously. Meanwhile all the characters often scream and shout if the seat was as much mental as physical. And while it is the survivors continue to run the jukebox with its old fine collection of rhythm and blues, it takes forever to realize they are running the generator of the tavern, their only source of light.

Anthony Jaswinski script focuses on the shock and terror on religious issues, although the role of a church in the neighborhood of the savings of characters and a little chatter about guilt and destiny ensures that these issues are not completely fade into obscurity. The film is designed more to tease the audience as the edges of darkness creeping ever closer to its few characters.

Anderson provides a number of style and energy in his direction. But the threat is too amorphous and people disappear, leaving behind only a pile of clothes for their existence on Earth, with no real horror. Indeed, if not removed, their disappearance should not be cause for celebration?

As the film ends on a note very flat, it is possible that the filmmakers themselves never quite understood what this threat to humanity omens. Never go in the direction of a film of alien invasion, “Vanishing” fails to establish even an M. Night Shyamalan feeling of dread. A cloud of darkness creeping sensitive along the streets may be obscured already photogenic, but it’s not exactly a bad guy you love to hate.
