Demi Lovato and Trace Cyrus Split

Age and distance put a strain on Demi Lovato's fledging romance with Trace Cyrus, and the couple has split, Cyrus tells PEOPLE exclusively.

"Demi is one of my good friends and I definitely became very, very close with her in the past few months, and it's something I really wanted to make work. But unfortunately, we both have very busy schedules – we're both on tour right now," says the Metro Station singer, who is also brother to Miley Cyrus. "I'm always on the other side of the world and so is she, so it just seemed like something that can't work out at this time."

Despite the split, there are no hard feelings between the two. "We gave it a shot and that's all you can do," says Cyrus. "Every time I hung out with that girl or talked on the phone with her, it was amazing. She's someone I can totally relate to.

"But she is a lot younger than me," Cyrus, 20, adds of Lovato, 16. "When someone is that much younger, you're looking for different things in relationships. Maybe when she's older and we've both matured, we'll be looking for the same thing and it can work out."

They've been twittering their love for each other for quite a while, and the flirty, young stars finally took it off twitter!
Demi Lovato and Trace Cyrus have both been busy touring and finally got to meet up with each other in real life.
Over the past few days, the pair was "hanging out every day," according to a source, in their hometown of Los Angeles.
They saw Transformers at Universal CityWalk, and sources add, "They have been watching a lot of movies at his house as well."
Sadly, Trace had to leave to resume touring in England, but not before twittering Demi on Thursday: "You already know your becoming the lyrics to my songs."
Demi's response? "We can just pretend that were together right now.... I miss you already."
Demi is 16 and Trace is 20.

Now that she's bringing an end to her television career, Selena Gomez appears to have found something else to occupy her time: Crashing other people's proms.

People magazine reports that the Wizards of Waverly Place star and her BFF/Princess Protection Program co-star, Demi Lovato, made an uninvited, unannounced appearance at the Etobicoke Collegiate Institute prom in Toronto on Thursday night.

The prom-crashing incident occurred while Gomez and Lovato attended a dinner in honor of their movie at the Liberty Grand Entertainment Complex. Apparently bored with the festivities, Gomez ducked out of the dinner and did some exploring, eventually stumbling across the prom.

After sweet-talking a security guard into letting her in, the 16-year-old decided to cut a rug with a few of the female prom-goers.

"They were all dancing in a group and having fun," an attendee tells the magazine. "Selena was thrilled to see firsthand what a real prom is like and that her dress was much like the other girl's dresses."

Giddy with the thrill of the experience, Gomez went back to the dinner and retrieved her pal Lovato, and the two returned to the prom, partying until 11 p.m.—when, lamentably, security told them to take a hike.

"PPP peeps and I crashed a prom tonight and danced with a highschool!!," Gomez tweeted later on. "amazing!! I finally had prom!"

Demi Lovato Says Trace Cyrus Is a "Good Friend"

So are Demi Lovato and Trace Cyrus actually more than just friends?

The pair has sparked Internet rumors over the past few weeks with their constant twitter flirting. Demi is super-close with Trace's younger sister, Miley Cyrus, and there is a whopping four-year age difference between the two.

However, Demi told TWIST Magazine on Tuesday that there's nothing to the story.

"Trace is really one of my good friends," she confessed. "People don't realize that he is really, really cool. And he is one of my good friends. I think we get along really well because he's someone who I can really talk to about a lot of stuff. We've both been through a lot."

When asked if she could give her fans advice on what to do if you like your friend's older brother, Demi coyly replied, "I don't know!"

Earlier today, Trace tweeted to Demi, "I already told U a bit ago how much i cant stand U! just dont forget it! haha,I MISS YOU! I think my dreams will b better tonight."
