    Same as before:

    • For large images use [tIMG] rather than [IMG]
    • Use attachments when necessary so images don't disappear when they are removed from their source
    • When possible, include links to the full-sized original so others can download them. If you don't want to share, state that in your posts so others don't continue to ask for links.
    • When quoting a post with images, leave the image out, or make sure you [tIMG] to reduce clutter.

Can buying things like charging cords and docking stations from places like eBay and from other companies other than Apple mess up the battery on an iPod/Touch?

Rookie question I'm sure but I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'd like to get a couple backups but don't want any to mess up anything!

    Thanks in advance!

Greetings all. I saw this YouTube video the other day at my friends house and I cant seem to find it again. Nevermind the actual video, it was what I saw that I thought was pretty neat. The iPad was clearly jailbroken and had what looked like a realtime weather wallpaper. It was pretty cool and I wanted to check it out. Do you know what this was?

Also just FYI, keep in mind the power consumption.

"The original PS3 model will use about 200 Watts while running Folding@home. A later model PS3 (with a 40 GB hard drive) will use about 115 Watts."

So, either 1 or 2 big light bulbs if you wanna look at it that way.

Well im at school so it would be using there power :) Do these tasks kinda lock the PS3 down for a specific amount of time or what?

I have a western digital external hard drive, and it recently stopped showing up on my desktop. However, it does show up on my disk utility, but it wont repair. Do I have to sacrifice everything on my hard drive?

That's like throwing away your computer because GarageBand is also available on the iPad, and attempting to produce an album on an iPad. Impossible.

It was funny to me when this started and people were talking about jailbreaking and making it so this file could not be written.

People were actually willing to make their phones not work properly because of their ignorance and paranoia.

By the way I missing the part were Jobs said this was an oversight on Apple's part. From the part quoted here, it essentially says, working as intended.

The issue is being deliberately overblown. There are a myriad other ways people are and have been "tracked". In this case, there isn't even any tracking going on, and the info that is stored WILL HAVE ZERO EFFECT ON THE AVERAGE USER. That's the kicker. It doesn't really affect anyone materially, tangibly, practically. But it *hints* that somewhere, somehow, there's a log indicating you were in the vicinity of certain cell phone towers. Which is about as worrisome as HR at work logging your hours!

The info is practically useless in terms of actually "tracking" your exact position, but so long as there is a snowball's chance of misconstruing it, a bunch of idiots *will* misconstrue it . . . because they're sick and tired of Apple showing up the rest of the industry as retards, and Apple users announcing the same. We have a group of tech geeks here who think everyone is equal, every device is wonderful and has its place, and every company should play fair with each other. So they come out and try to equalize everything and downplay enthusiasm they deem as inappropriate. It's hilarious.

What kind of BMW do you recommend for a young bachelor business guy in a popular downtown location? I was thinking about the 3 series.
There are a lot of 3-series around. Spice it up a bit, and get something a little more unique...

There is an interesting phenomenon of "steadiness" (my words). As engines get more fuel efficient, people buy bigger/more powerful cars. Today's engines (per some measure I forget that makes sure the measure is for similar power/weight ratios) use something like a 10th of the fuel to produce the same power as engines from the '70s. The unheralded success story is that engine engineers have done the same thing with the internal combustion engine as electrical engineers did with electronics.

    Similar thing for the areodynamics.

It's us, the consumer, that buggered up the fuel savings. We wanted 6 cylinders instead of 4, and 8 instead of 6. We wanted torque, power, and speed. We wanted trucks instead of cars. We wanted vans instead of station-wagons. Then we added all the electrical things (which rob an engine of power). Power windows, brakes, steering, computers, GPS units, DVD players, AC, heated seats etc.

So - as engine efficiency improved we added things that needed power, so that our mileage rates stayed "steady". We are getting more - for the same.

Same thing happens for freeways. It has been known for a long time that building more roads doesn't make traffic flow better - it merely allows for more cars. People will live, on average, about 40 minutes from work. If you build a new freeway to cut that commute time to 30 minutes.... they move 10 minutes further out.

I lived in city with no highways... Vancouver, BC (if you don't count the 5km or so of the #1 that cuts through the NE corner). Has been in the top 3 to 5 (usually at #1) ranked most liveable cities in the world for a number of years now.

We now live in the country, and a Passat has no appeal to me. Though we do drive a Smart Car. We love taking it to the US where there are far fewer of them. We get stopped at gas stations by people who are curious about it, and who think it's a toy. I just tell them that my $25 fill up will take me close to 500km (~300miles) - as they are hitting the $100 mark on their top up - that they do every couple of days. Hee Hee. We also get discounted street parking in Victoria, free hotel parking at some locations in Victoria, and preferred parking at some malls and in Sidney.

Just fitted my 2 new Sata cards and booted her up only to receive a Kernal panic.

I had noticed that there was a ticking sound coming from the unit when I reconnected it to the power supply this afternoon. Could it just be a busted HD?

Any sound certainly wouldn't be from the SATA cards. A "ticking" sound must be either a drive or fan.

EDIT: Also try emailing FirmTek's support. I have used it via email in the past and they are very good and usually email back within 10-15 min. This (http://www.firmtek.com/support/) is the URL. The first contact with them is via the site and it's all email after that.

BTW.. the Sonnet card you bought is exactly the same as a 1S2 FirmTek model so you can contact them about both. Just say it's a 1S2 as it is anyway. FirmTek makes the Sonnet SATA cards as I said earlier.

Too bad you can't boot to see what firmware you have. Boot from a PATA drive with the cards in and look in system profiler. An MDD should be using the newest firmware.

I think at your age it is your parent's responsibility to provide for you. That isn't arguable. What is arguable is how they will provide moral/ethical/behavioral guidance to you--and I don't think that trying to stop you from doing something that (a) you're already doing, (b) you're going to do as soon as you can, (c) you're going to do anyway, and (d) that can be done safely. You are your own person and can make your own actions, choices, and (perhaps) mistakes. I think any parent that at your age of 18 tries to tell you where you can or cannot go, at whose house you can or cannot sleep over, or what girl you can or cannot like/love/date/****, is overparenting.

Cut the umbilical cord and start making your own choices--your parents need to cope with your adulthood.

It is seeming more and more likely that enhanced interrogation techniques (a.k.a. torture), provided information that allowed the U.S. to kill O.B.L.....

    edit;

I doubt we'll ever know the real facts as it's already turned political. It seems that supporters of torture are going to claim it worked and opponents will say the opposite

Before a day had passed, the torture debate had flared. The chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Representative Peter T. King, Republican of New York, told Fox News that the success of the hunt for Bin Laden was due to waterboarding. The next morning, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California and chairwoman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said just as flatly that “none of it came as a result of harsh interrogation practices.” NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/04/us/politics/04torture.html)

for what it's worth, the NY Times report contradicts the idea that torture provided the vitally useful information

He did things the Apple way and put design before function.

Tweetie 2 is beautiful, but not having push notifications is pathetic. Whats even more pathetic is his excuse that "its borderline impossible to do it reliably". Thats funny, because I have SimplyTweet & Echofon Pro and they both push great!

Personally don't get the desire to have push for Tweets. Atleast in my case my world won't come to a screaching halt if I don't get my tweets right away. I have a job and such so I can't afford the time to look at tweets every thirty seconds...cuz...well....I have a job and such. I check them when there is a lul on the action or when I get home.

Then again, I don't have push turned on for my work or personal e-mail accounts either. I want to be in control of my e-mail....not it in control of me.
