    November 23, 2006 CNN
NEW YORK (AP) -- Cell phone owners will be allowed to break software locks on their handsets in order to use them with competing carriers under new copyright rules announced Wednesday.

Given the above news, NO cellphone company may soon be subsidizing ANY phones.

Well, it's a totally separate subject that's off-topic for this thread, but I would like to quote one single sentence from the related CNN news article.

The new rules will take effect Monday and expire in three years.

So, here's my question: If these rights are so important and have been recognized as being so important, then why would they want to deliberately sunset those same laws? Something here doesn't smell right.

Looks like that 8 pound, 10" iPod might be true after all. :D

Seriously though, I'm sure Apple has a tablet prototype, but I'm doubtful that they'll release one in 2007.

That makes sense, while not incredibly expensive, the cost of manufacturing is still overhead if they can reduce it by providing a mechanism for the consumer to d/l it why not.

SI is superior in conversions only
Imperial is superior as I actually have a feel for the numbers

Please tell me that's sarcasm.

I have a "feel" for Imperial measurements, and they are a pain in the ***.

I don't think so, and I'm not being sarcastic.

Temperature is a great example. Celsius and Kelvin are fantastic for science and engineering for obvious reasons, but when it comes to everyday uses, Fahrenheit makes more sense. It's very intuitive to think of numbers on a 100 scale. That's why when you're looking at the weather or taking someone's body temperature, it's easier to get a grasp of what is "high" or "low." Fahrenheit is also more accurate for casual uses because it can express smaller changes more easily than Celsius.

The metric system also lacks easy naming schemes for everyday sizes. Recipes, for example, would have to be written out in ml rather than cups or spoons. In such a situation, base 10 is not helpful at all because recipes are rarely divided or multiplied by 10. The metric system could in fact be worse for such applications because cutting 473 ml in half is more of a pain than cutting 2 cups in half (and yes, while recipes could theoretically be modified to be in flat metric ratios, the fact is that there are far too many recipes in existence already for that to be realistic in the short-medium term).

However, we have been seeing the transition to metric in some subtler ways. Soda, water, and juice have been sold in metric quantities for a while now, and I've even seen more and more bags of chips, boxes of cereal, and some candy bars (mind you not popular ones) come in metric sizes. This is obviously advantageous for manufacturers because it means a streamlined production line. I just don't think we're going to get most people to use the metric system for non-scientific daily tasks because it may not be as superior as it would seem at first blush.

As amazing as free MobileMe sounds, I find this HIGHLY unlikely.

Why not? The Pros outweigh the cons.

Ends developer confusion on the app store about whether to support MobileMe, Wifi or roll their own Cloud sync.

Benefits mainly Mac users (nice iLife tie in) but also benefits those running Windows and Outlook with Windows MobileMe Control Panel

Will clearly sell more iPhone/iPod Touch/iPads because consumers know their data will be in sync across the devices.

Cost - free means a LOT more users which means a need to beef up infrastructure. Apple does have a new large data center being built.

Current members - do I get a refund or does Apple announce a free version of MobileMe and boosts the features of the paid account creating a Free/Paid tier?

There are certainly plusses and minuses about the strategy but make not bones about it people want Mobileme they just don't want to pay for it. A free "lite" version satiates those people.

Let's face it the popularity of Google stems from the fact that their tools are free to the end user.

Heh. No LTE, no NFC, no bigger screen, no antenna fix, and now no iOS upgrade? What's the point in releasing an iPhone at all this year?

These are just RUMORS! They will do at least some. Most likely, NFC, antenna fix, and IOS upgrade.

I wouldn't hold my breath, the Back to School iPod promo has always been a bait to help clear out old inventory. They won't make it available to buy, online or off, until after the promo ends.

As the promo in the UK ends on the 7th October, does that mean I won't see them filter through until then?

It's a shame if it is.

Why do some end in September and others in October?

"* Buy a qualifying Mac and an iPod from the online Apple Store or an Apple retail store purchase must be made between August 1st and October 7th and receive a mail-in rebate up to 100 (UK) / 160 (Ireland). Terms and Conditions apply. "

    I need one so soon!

So many has bought an iPhone 4. At&t and Verzion.

We all are on a 2 year contract.

Yes, the US is literally the entire world. There are no other countries, let alone other countries with 12-month contracts. Why, Sir, that would be inconceivable!

That's what I'm saying, $400x2=$800-$300=$500 profit for Apple, That's wonderful for Apple.

On the other hand, internal pricing from Intel can be VERY different. So don't let it get too much into your head.

Bottom line, these quads are truly wonderful machines to buy.

I just really haven't seen a compelling reason to spend the money for a tablet PC/Mac.

"You can write on it! And Take Notes!" Yeah...and? I can also spend 50 cents on a notebook and write on that too! Besides, I can type faster than I can write.

"Home automation!" Maybe, if I made over $300,000 a year and could afford the smugness of turning my lights on and off with a computer as opposed to a light switch.

I feel that a tablet to most people is just a giant PDA, and I really don't see myself using it for any other reason than that. I know there are business reasons to have tablets, like for nurses, or production people, etc., but for the average person, what's the revolution? Too much money for too little IMO.

An Apple PDA with a mobile OSX? Now we're talkin'.

I would be happy if it was in aluminium and in black to allow better cooling. But that would be mighty fine.

Would be nice with a usb and firewire port in front as well.

Show me something that works as well BEFORE Apple demoed the iPhone.

    Technology =/= usability.

If you hate Apple then why are you doing here?

You can't protect (or indeed measure) 'usability'.

People come here because we use, have problems with, or are considering buying Apple products. Not all of us are absolutely crazy in love for for anything that Jobs has touched.

did you need to use that manual to help operate the phone?

honestly I think android is just as intuitive and easy to use as ios. I can't believe people actually say they don't understand how to use android. for god sakes my 8 year old nephew figured out his dad's android phone after a 30 minutes of playing with it.

I prefer ios for it's elegance but android isn't tough to use at all...

Yes, I did need to use the Android manual... a lot!

I'll bet the 8 year-old relative figured out how to play the games, but did he add names to the address book, download photos to a computer, or set alarms and calendar events? Did he figure out how to get the phone pad to reappear when it disappeared just as he was about to enter a number?

I'm often confronted with a choice of "A" or "B" with the Android phone when I real desire is to do neither. There is no intuitive way to back out of that screen nor lead me to do what I wish.

Apple products are far more intuitive than other products. They just don't look better but the whole user experience is better.

I had to click on this to see how the **** so many pages could be on a simple math problem. To those who got 288, kudos. To those who got 2, you're wrong. Sorry, no offense, but it's very simple math. Fivetoedsloth, dukebound85, others are right, with multiplication and division (or addition and subtraction) it goes from left to right.

Also, if you trust your Mac more than google, copy and paste the question into mac's Grapher program. It displays it correctly (with the 48 above the 2 and 9+3 off to the side) and gives you 288.

I just don't wanna see the Mac Pro...key word here is "Pro"...iOS-ified.
This isn't a consumer level device, it's not for buying it to show off the latest Apple toy.
It is a workhorse, it is a behemoth, it is the king of kings when it comes to Mac desktops. Size-as long as it has power, i could care less how big it is/gets within reason. I want power, expansion capabilities, no SSD...especially no SSD...
I don't mind solid state stuff in the iOS devices...I've even come around lately to liking solid state stuff to a certain degree more than in past months...but I don't want it exclusively in the Pro. If prices come down...which they will over I'd put two HDDs in and two SSDs in.
Optical drives...I want them in the unit. But if they can make it write or read CDs just as fast outside of it...(I admit not being educated on the differences performance-wise between an internal and external optical drive) I'd be fine getting it separate.

I'm very excited, in any case to see what's going to come of the (supposed) update...if nothing else to ogle some shiny new piece of hardware.

As for being more restrictive, you're choosing to break the terms of the licence if you install it on more than one machine.

    For rule-breakers it's more restrictive.
    For rule-followers it's less restrictive.

I thought we were talking about rule-breakers which is why I'm going on and on about how it's more restrictive.

I like this young geeky woman:

There is a new mnemonic featured in Danica McKellar's books Math Doesn't Suck[2] and Kiss My Math[3] that does address this very issue: "Pandas Eat: Mustard on Dumplings, and Apples with Spice." The intention being that Mustard and Dumplings is a "dinner course" and that Apples and Spice is a "dessert course." Then it becomes not a linear string of operations to do one after the other, but rather the "dinner course" operations are considered together and performed left to right, and then addition and subtraction are considered together, again performed again left to right.
