There seem to be alot of interesting options as far as the live previews go (personally I like the animated thumbs idea, but perhaps on mouse-over only...this could even be implemented with audio files - previewing the start, middle and end in short bursts perhaps). Hopefully whatever is implemented will be customizable by users, especially those on older machines who may not have the graphics bandwidth to deal with the new innovations.

Bringing me to my question: has anyone personally seen how vista's live previews and 'flip' etc. are performing on older machines?

Your rebuttel makes no sense. He's not talking just about himself but in general about the risk of defection among people that arent willing to wait. Himself being an example.

With the fierce competition iOS faces from android right now and maybe also nokia by then, you seem like a fanboy out of touch with the present market reality. You can be sure he wont be the only one pondering this. Very risky move from apple if they would delay the next iphone IMNSHO.

I don't see any risk. Apple buyers are sufficiently ignorant of other choices, and too vain to be seen with anything without the Apple logo to prove their cool.

They will, as the white holdouts, wait for an unreasonable amount of time. Even if at their own expense. Apple had them right where they want them. waiting with baited breath.

The 13"ers are always gonna be 13"ers. Trust me, they would rationalize their purchase even if the 11" was 1600x900.

I think that's not correct. Some people need more than 128GB you know. Yes, you can carry an external drive but then why not carry a larger machine with more internal storage?

The 1366x768 resolution can be limiting. For example, Apple's own Server Admin software will barely show the summary page at 768 pixels tall. The bottom row of graphs are tiny squished things at the bottom. It's clearly not meant to run on this small a display. And it's a perfect example of something you would want on a small carry it anywhere Mac.

I have better sense than to jump up there in the first place.

I believe in people taking responsibility for their actions. The guy should have stopped. The woman should never have jumped up there. But I'm afraid of establishing a legal precedent that says it's okay to put yourself into a bad situation and then blame someone else for how it turns out.

What if he had been pointing a gun at her and she had stood her ground? Would it be her fault if he pulled the trigger?

I continue to be amazed by the number of students at my community college that have iPhones. These are students who for the most part are struggling to make ends meet, yet were willing to spend their limited cash that way. There are at least two or three students with iPhones in each of my classes; two years ago, I didn't see any -- and mine was a curiosity to them.

people value what they value. do you think they are getting what they paid for in terms of education? probably not.

It sounds like you just ripped that directly from a George Carlin routine.

I don't know where I have it from, but the name George Carlin sounds familiar. The part you're quoting has been lying in the back of my mind for quite a while. If it's identical to something that Carlin has said, then it's probably not a coincidence.

I dont think that the piercing is all that noticeable if you were to talk to me face to face, since it is more on the side of my face and not more forward like a eyebrow or nose piercing. I like it, my friend likes it, boyfriend likes it, and the guys in SF like it, cruised me hard while walking to the train (especially the business men in the financial district, ages 30-50+, and yes there was no mistaking it for anything else, maybe its just Thursday is horney day for business men? )

It was a good day. :D

I like your piercing... I think though what was happening here is you got your piercing, you felt great, you were confident and I bet that really showed. I know women find that sexy, maybe men do too.

If you walked down the street with that same confidence I bet you would get "cruised hard":D (I never thought that was a phrase that would ever use :o ) :D

Do people really want a white iPhone that badly? Honestly I think the original black one is more attractive.

exactly the point. to some people like me , my favorite color is white . to me i think white looks sexy and being that i had to get another iphone and im still within the 30 day period . i would gladly do a swap . to some people white is the color they want . if it wasnt about color every car would come in black. gotta change it up a bit . im stoked and would love to get the iphone 4 in white . even at full price why would anyone complain??? we pay $499 for an ipad that is a "luxury" item??

If you do this, make sure you use very, very, very reliable fans! The fans fail, and this system is toast. Literally!

Nice thing is, this all fits in 4U, so it's cheap colo.

Thats pretty cool, but you'd probably be better off with an off-the-shelf case for this project. Fans, that is an area where you will see a difference in the quality of case design. If you look at mid-high range rackmount equipment you'll see they often have rows of fans two deep for redundancy, if one fan fails there is another one right behind it; and the ducting is designed to provide sufficient and even airflow over all critical components. Like jtara says if a fan goes and you don't catch it, components can heat up and excessive heat is a killer.

If you go the Linux route, you'd be wise to run smartd to monitor hard drive temperatures and email/sms you if the temp hits an upper limit.

You should also choose a chassis with good airflow design (ie: ducting such that the air blows evenly over the drives, and also covers the other components appropriately). Too low of temp is just as bad as too high of temp for drives, a poor chassis design will result in some drives being too warm and some being too cool. Check out Googles study for details on this, it's a must read for anyone interested in DIY RAID.

You can also look into fan speed controllers, to keep airflow from being excessive, some are thermostat regulated. This is the type of thing that is built into a high quality rackmount system, one of the reasons they are so expensive.

These articles about market share all the time are becoming so boring...

    Here's another (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2011/apr/18/smartphone-market-android-win-nokia-rim-lose).

Outside the US, iOS is bleeding bad.

The benefits of carbon fiber over traditional materials has included high tensile strength, low weight and low thermal expansion.

... and the downsides are very high cost and extreme scratch-ability.

It's certainly possible that internal supporting structures could be made of CF, but it would not do for the exterior. LiquidMetal actually makes sense there, but LM is even more expensive than CF.

While Apple's new iMac models released yesterday (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/03/apple-releases-new-sandy-bridge-quad-core-imacs-with-thunderbolt/) appear nearly identical to their predecessors at first glance, the company has of course made a number of changes to beef up performance of its flagship desktop line.

Probably because they sent him an iPad for free, so he has to be nice.

Possibly.... I like to think of Colbert as the Apple show-off guy in comedy since he is one of the few, who gets access to Apple's stuff outside the lockdown doors and can display stuff in public (see iPad on Music Awards).

I bet he has some small contract with Apple.

In Stockholm and Frankfurt, I hardly see any iPhones. Also, I hardly see any iPads. I do however see a ton of MacBookPros but almost no MacBookAirs.

I find both places very style-centric (Stockholm especially), but also somewhat frugal. I don't think that iPhone will reach as large of a market share in Europe due to the high upfront cost of an iPhone (659/799 for 16GB/32GB).

Actually, it's running joke that you can identify an American by iPhone/iPad (aside from the loud inane conversation).

You hardly see iPhones in Stockholm!? I work in Stockholm and I see iPhones wherever I look, it seems like everyone has one to me. And it's like 75% iPhone 4 and 25% 3/3G

I hope Steve is ok. I have to admit I'm slightly dissapointed that none of the portables or the iMac (not that surpised about the iMac) got an update. I thought for sure the MacBook Pro would see something. Oh well, silent update time now I guess.

Ad feminam attacks aside, I think you may be underestimating the damage this kind of leak will do to Apple. Competitors now have confirmation of Apple's plans and can push for competing deals to be negotiated so that their stores can come out at the same time as Apple's. The leak is an attempt by Lion's Gate to bring more competition into an area that Apple is blazing the trail for. All Mac users should defend Apple and do whatever we can to help the mothership.

Honestly, you are the type of Mac user that makes me embarrassed to be a Mac fan. "The Mothership"? Are you even f'n kidding me? It's a corporation. And if you don't think that competitors have a very good idea of where these deals stand, then you are in need of an eye-opener. It is the consumers who are in the dark, not the industry.

That's all I can say. I will continue on using the Mac platform, and telling those around me what I see are the pluses of it, but you will never see me take things to the level you have, with a battlecry to come to the aid of a large company that certainly doesn't need our help in dealing with a movie company. Good luck to you.
