You might be waiting for a while. If your machine still does what it needs to do then wait...but if you really need a new computer then go ahead. You could wait another 10 months though.

Download the Application Nocturne. If you Google search Nocturne I believe its the 3rd one down from the top. There is an option within there that allows you to invert the menubar. If you don't like the orange highlights it gives you when you first invert it just check the option Invert Hue. The preferences can be accessed via the menubar icon that shows up when the app is opened. :D:D:D

Oh nice! Too bad it makes the keyboard layout indicators look odd. Using it on the iMac though :)

BTW, anyone know why the center part of the Time Machine logo is not showing in my black menubar?

I want retribution, so do most americans. Glad we got it. And please define "destroyed", those countries were radical muslim wastelands and iraq had an evil dictator. They were pretty much destroyed as it is. Just like dirty trash bins attract flies and rats, those countries attract terrorists. Your solution to just leave the middle east alone is counterproductive, ignoring bullies never worked. Your country tried that with hitler, how did that work out for you?

Don't fool yourself, this has nothing to do with going after bullies or being the good guy.

Where are we with Mugabe (Who I'd argue is definitely as evil as Osama)? Where are we with Darfur? Or some other various countries in Africa that have some really evil people in it.

Shoot, we have supported the bad guys before (Central America for example or for that matter we supported Saddam Hussein at one point and even Stalin with propoganda telling people how Stalin was our friend and I'd argue Stalin was probably more insane than Hitler. Hitler learned propoganda from Stalin as well) because it was in our better interest.

Don't go thinking the US always supports the good guys or goes after the bad guys. There's a reason the terrorists can convince people we're evil and join them. It's a myth that "they hate our way of life" and more that we've supported people who haven't been so kind in the middle east.

In the end a lot of our follies ended up due to the fear of communism. So now instead we have the fear of the religious terrorists. I wonder who we'll end up pissing off now with our policies of anything (and ally with anyone) who we think will help us against who we dislike (Even if who we ally with are not nice people themselves).

Unfortunately, facts do not matter to these people, as most IT departments are clueless about TCO.

Actually most IT managers/departments are very informed about TCO, which is why they don't shell out the money for hardware that is 2x as expensive, software that is 4x as expensive (due to miserable volume licensing plans for OS X), the cost of training support and logistics personnel to support Macs/OS X, and the amount of time it will take to retrain users to use the new hard/software.

Ironically, most people who make statements such as yours either aren't in IT or have a very unrealistic view of the world.

I would really like some good arguments to put to him regarding why mac's should be allowed on our company network and should form part of our IT systems.

When you write your proposal, consider using proper English grammar. "Macs" as in "a number of computers made by Apple" does not, notice, have an apostrophe.

The basic fact of the matter is that large, established Windows-based network infrastructures have no incentive at all to switch to Apple machines.

Enterprise-support from the manufacturer (Apple)? HUGE fail.

Seriously. This is what guarantees Dell's, HP's, and RIM's complete dominance of the enterprise market. Who would have guessed that when your central business functions depend on your hardware being "up" it doesn't cut it to have to bring a unit into an Apple Store?

A High Court in the UK has ordered SONY to disolve its merger with BMG. Fighting this could cost valuable resources.
If they lose, the cost of breakup could well put SONY under. Remember BETAMAX. Yes, I know SONY/BMG is the music arm of the company-but it will be a drain on the whole company.

Dude, seriously give it a rest. You've just shot down your credibility because SonyBMG is a separate division that Sony Corp. itself owns a 50% stake in with Bertlesman(n) owning the other 50%. That ruling has no effect on Sony Corp. itself. You citing this on a forum is as lame as the many people on Digg or Slashdot who rush to any thread concerning Sony and post about RootKits when again, it was SonyBMG that did that and not any other SonyCorp. division. Point is, any negative ruling against SonyBMG has no impact at all on Blu-Ray development nor will it give any traction to HD-DVD.

Plus, a UK High Court does not have the power to dissolve SonyBMG. Perhaps for the UK subsidiary division but not for the entire worldwide operations of SonyBMG. The only way SonyBMG would be forced to break up would be if the European Commission or the U.S. Justice Department took action and won in their respective court systems.

The chipmakers for the PSP3 are having a bitch of a time making any that are worth using in the player-they have a 1 out of 5-6 usable chip ratio. The rest get used in other less demanding hardware, or get tossed out-. SONY still pays for them-good or not-talk about bleeding. They are very expensive.

First off, you mean the PS3. Are you a Microsoft shill? The chipmaker is IBM. IBM, Sony, and Toshiba all have vested interests in making the Cell chip a success (although Toshiba would rather not see the PS3 a success because it would wipe out HD-DVD's chance at success). Failure rates will not have an impact on the MSRP of any Sony product for the consumer because they will want the PS3 to obliterate the Microsoft Xbox360 and the HD-DVD platforms all at once.

Poor PQ reviews, the lack of BR2 (yes folks youve been had-the current discs -or BR1- are not the 'final' version, those COULD be out by November, optimistically-they were rushed out so they could say "Were first!" They are said to be 'fine tuning' the "real" BR2 disc spec and manufacture. Translation-it isnt working very well, like the PSP chips.

First off, it was HD-DVD that jumped the gun and shipped first in a desperate attempt to solidify itself before Blu-Ray (and later, the PS3) shipped, not the other way around.

Now with that having been said, get some perspective. The original DVD platform didn't reach maturity or success until the 3rd Generation players were brought out. Both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray decks currently are on their first generation, and both are showing signs of quality issues. The Toshiba HD-DVD deck had to have a firmware update to keep it from crashing due to Microsoft's usual software krappiness in the form of the iHD software. Both the current HD-DVD and Blu-Ray machines aren't using the greatest chip decoders which are causing both to not truly output at 1080i, let alone 1080p. This will be corrected when the second generation decks from both platforms ship with the new Sigma Designs decoders in the next couple of months. While it is true that Sony is shipping titles in MPEG2 until they bring out their own hardware, once that happens, the encoding in H.264 will be noticibily better than the HD-DVD titles that will continue to ship in Microsoft's inferior VC-1 (ahem, Windows Media 9) codec because Microsoft in truth is supporting HD-DVD simply because it uses the Microsoft iHD software instead of Java (like Blu-Ray does) and thus earns royalities with each HD-DVD deck shipped and every VC-1 encoded movie title also shipped. While Blu-Ray spec wise supports VC-1 (in addition to H.264 MPEG4 and MPEG2), it will be a very cold day in Hell when Sony decides to ship a Blu-Ray disc encoded in VC-1.

The moral of the story is to pick up a Blu-Ray deck when the second (or third) generation hits, and only buy discs encoded in the H.264 codec instead of the current MPEG2 versions. At that time, HD-DVD will be as useful as a Philips CD-i deck or a Circuit City DIVX player.

Briefly king of the world, suddenly things dont bode well for SONY or the BR disc.

Right. I bet you are anxiously awaiting the Microsoft Zune.

Geez, dude, it's all about saving time so you *do* have more time on your own. For example, texting is now used in situations where you would have called/answered a phone call before. Texting is more efficient because you can just put off answering the text until later (you could also not take a call and just call the person back later, but you wouldn't know how urgent the call was unless you took the time to check your voice mail if they left one).

Likewise, I use the humble web features on my Sony Ericsson phone a *lot*, to look up restaurant/bar addresses, movie times, etc. when I am out and about. Again, normally I would have no other recourse other than calling 411 or MovieFone, or finding a newsstand/bookstore where I could possibly look the information up. It would just be a time-saver to have faster, easier access to information from my phone.

Embrace technology, dude. It's only there to help you. You can always *choose* not to check your email even if you have an uber-phone. Heck, you can even turn the phone off while you "eat lunch in the park and listen to the birds".

Everyone who has said something against Mac's in a business environment is right.

Everyone who has harped on downtime for PC's is wrong.

I often wonder where this mystical downtime associated with PC's is?

Sure PC's can get viruses, and yes, viruses can cause downtime. If downtime is that important, get a IPS.

If downtime is so important buy a better warranty. I sell Lenovo's as a standard business desktop, $549 w/ a 3 year NBD on site warranty, can't wait NBD, tack on another $90 for a 4 hour response warranty.

If up time is important than you do things to mitigate that downtime, and I don't care if you add up every single thing out there to mitigate that risk you won't come close to the cost of implementing Mac hardware.

And that's not even getting into software compatability, backup, service, and all the other things mentioned here.

I have never, EVER, had a user call me due to downtime on a virus or anything else where we had put in a proper security system. User security, IPS, network security, etc.

I rarely even have my customers use their warranties, even though we sell them with each machine. I've had one bad PS in a HP Server in the past 2 years and that was a installation error. The customer had a new phone system installed and for some reason the installer decided to move their server connection to the phone system's UPS, which is not capable of protecting the server.

I sell uptime and business continuity and Mac's don't offer it. It's also obvious Apple wants no part of it by getting rid of the Xserve's, but even before that their absolutely INSANE 30K or whatever it was for 1 year of on site warranty was ridiculous.

Still, even if they fixed all that, SharePoint is an app killer for Mac's, without ActiveX its useless to most business customers.

Specifically mention how video resources can easily be composed with OSX Server's Podcast Producer and served to mac's iPhones/iPad.

Another aspect ... no NEED to purchase different PDF volume licenses for Adobe Pro/Standard 9/10 for simple editing [I'm unsure if Preview can edit Tables/create them].

MS Office is now properly available for OSX and is up to par with 2010 for Windows: including ability to import, edit and add-on to PST files. This will be an important mention.

    * Key point. Mention a server based email anti-virus license solution - for outbound emails, or FTP/Sharepoint sites that have files uploaded to Windows users that your company/employees communicate with.

    * MS Office Communicator [OCS] is now available and COMPLETELY compatible for Mac - part of Office 2011 as I'm ALREADY doing this without need for a VPN connection [using OWA settings] with corporation contacts in OCS.

    * more standardized ordering of hardware makes support MUCH MUCH easier. Having a high level apple certification for both hardware/server - makes your argument THAT MUCH more sound and heard in a more official and presentable voice.

    * Mention how Open Directory supports Active Directory infrastructure - again certification and a direct line of specific Apple support in this respect WILL be crucial and helpful.

Wrong. We're a SharePoint Developer, yes if you want a pretty calendar for all to see Safari cuts it, beyond that its not even close.

Sharepoint Workspace does 10 times as much as the Mac SharePoint app. The Mac SharePoint app is there to make up for the lack of some ActiveX connectivity but you cannot sync entire projects offline.

What good is open directory? I can manage every single thing on every single Windows box, can't do that with a Mac.

You have 100 PC's and you want to publish a new SharePoint list to Outlook for every user.

How do you do it without Active Directory and group policies...well first, SharePoint lists don't work in Outlook for the Mac so guess you'd stop there.

All your doing is wasting your companies time, effort, and money, trying to shoe horn something in there that should not be just because.

You want standard hardware, fine, go pick a spec and buy it. Who exactly from Apple is going to come out and fix the computer, no one. Yet you can get same day on site service from IBM, Lenovo, and Dell, cheap.

Mac's in a business environment make no logical sense, it is an emotional decision because when put down on paper and looked at from a TCO/ROI aspect they will always come out on the losing end.

I could go on and on, but this is a productivity issue: I am not as productive on Windows as I am on a Mac. Microsoft has been in disarray for years and it shows. Why on Server 2008 does the utility "Server Management" and "Manage Server" point to 2 totally different applications? Sounds like someone is shipping off projects to India and not paying attention.

Now before I get accused of MS bashing, I will point out that MS makes excellent front-end applications such as Office. This is where the company shines (Access is really great product). They just make crappy operating systems and servers.

Windows Server 2008 does not have a Manage Server option, and in fact its Manage My Server. SBS has that, but not server 2008.

Crappy servers? Really, find me anyone, anyone, who is a system admin, who complains about MS's server operating systems?

They are rock solid. I've never had a single server crash, not a one. They run, night and day, without problems.

If you think servers are for sharing data then it shows how little people know about the true reason you put in a server. You manage entire networks with them.

    1. I have had to fix the registry twice after installing Opera -if you install that into Windows 7 the system starts generating security errors and warnings, and you can no longer open hyperlinks in Outlook. This is Microsoft preventing you from installing 3rd party browsers into Windows 7 -I don't have these issues on my Mac (I run 3 browsers there)

Really, then why not do it all via GPO and be done with it? It has nothing to do with MS stopping you from installing browsers. I'd question the common sense of installing some 3rd party little known browser in a business environment.

The fact your using the windows installer to push out an app in a business environment with AD available to you is a problem in itself. If you need to install software and then push out REG patches it can all be done via GPO in 1 step.

I look after 250+ macs across 8 advertising companies across 3 countries.

    Snip...

All very true. I would guess however that your industry is more Mac centric and your setup while most likely robust was not something that was put together in a day.

The value of running a Mac for business reasons outweighs the extra cost of managing your system. The integration software is not cheap, I'd suspect you make a good bit more than a standard system admin, and if you don't, you should because of the stuff your running.

I'm sure your system works well, but I'd also guess your system cost quite a bit more to implement than something all Windows based.

Your company did it for a business reason, not just because, which is what a lot of these answers are here, lets just run Mac's because.

If Mac's made more business sense to a customer I'd be all over it, value is what you need to provide. I had a customer, 9 Mac's, 2 PC's, once we sat down and looked at what it cost to do it the right way, like your doing it, out went the Mac's. There was no specific reason for them to stay on Mac's.

As far as the comment on the Enterprise vs the smaller business. We implement Enterprise quality systems in small businesses. That is our business model. It is not expensive at all, at least today. I doubt we could do what we do today for the cost 5-6 years ago.

MS is not stupid, they are creating a lot of solid smaller business apps that are cost effective.

There's 2 jailbreak apps for this. One creates a daemon that constantly deletes the location files. Another onewipes out the location history and then does a wipeout of each location currently.

A lot of people are saying this is no big deal. According to the hacker that found this out, a hacker can hack onto the computer that the backup is located on and find out all of your locations.

All the people saying, "I don't sell drugs so I have nothing to worry about" or "I have nothing to hide" are probably the same people who voted for homeland security.......and we can all see how good that was...NOT.

If a hacker can hack into your computer, then the first thing you need to do is not worry about this file in the iPhone backup, but worry about the fact that a hacker can hack into your computer. Get some perspective, man. If someone hacks into your computer, you should first worry about your emails being read. The hacker can go to amazon, type in your user name, "forgot password", they send it to your email address, the hacker reads it, changes the details, and orders a few big TVs on your credit card. Or they get your online banking details and empty your account. Companies have lost hundreds of thousands of dollars that way.

If a hacker can get your iPhone, or your iPhone backup, then again the first thing you need to worry about is not this file, but all the information that you stored yourself. Again, email. Web history. Address book.

The "I sell no drugs..." line is a strawman. People don't have to not worry because they are not selling drugs; for example I found by complete accident what Christmas present my wife had bought for me online, which spoilt the surprise for me (I didn't tell her, obviously). So privacy is important for completely legal and positive things like buying Christmas presents.

The point here is that this file is not something you need to worry about; in the list of things to worry about it is very, very, very far at the end of the list. If you are a drug dealer, there is very little that police could do with this file. Especially since according to what Apple has now said, it would be completely useless as evidence against you. There is a lot that they can learn from your address book, phone numbers, emails, etc., and that is what you should worry about whether you are a drug dealer, or a law obiding citizen.

So you go with the company that has shown that is will look for any way to make an extra buck.
I trust Google a hell of a lot more than Apple.

Google gives out the location of your WiFi router to anyone who knows the MAC address, so if you moved to get away from a stalker, or if you are in witness protection, then you better leave your old router at home. Try this website:

    http://samy.pl/androidmap/

This is fortunately not something that _I_ have to worry about, but for some people this would be a real risk. The site locates my router within 100m and tells the world about it. It does that with every router, whether you have a phone or not. Apple keeps their database safe from hackers, Google doesn't.
