Lindsey Vonn Wins Women's Super-G Race; Kostelic Takes Men's Combined

Lindsey Vonn of the U.S. won today’s super-G in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, ahead of Germany’s Maria Riesch, the leader of the overall World Cup standings.

The 26-year-old Vonn, who tops the super-G competition over Riesch, clocked 1 minute, 22.64 seconds, just five-hundredths of a second faster than the German. Switzerland’s Lara Gut was third.

Vonn, the three-time defending World Cup overall champion, trails Riesch by 145 points. Austria’s Elisabeth Goergl is a further 459 points behind. The American has a 151-point advantage over Riesch in the super-G competition.

In Kitzbuehel, Austria, Ivica Kostelic of Croatia won the men’s combined event -- which takes the best results from the slalom and downhill. He was 11th in yesterday’s downhill, and second in today’s slalom. The 31-year-old leads the overall competition.
